The Wilmer-Hutchins High School’s NJROTC program in Dallas recently showcased the skills and discipline they’ve acquired during their annual military inspection. The cadets’ performance, which took place on Feb. 8, was not just a display of standard military drills, but a demonstration of the valuable life lessons they’ve gained through the program.

According to Sr. Naval Science Instructor Lt. Col. Hamartrya Tharpe, the intricate drill routines and activities the cadets engage in are designed to instill qualities that are applicable to life beyond the program. The annual military inspection, where area commanders assess the cadets’ adherence to rules, regulations, routines, and procedures, serves a purpose that extends far beyond a simple grade.

The NJROTC program aims to cultivate responsibility, accountability, and leadership in its cadets, preparing them for the challenges they will face in the future. Naval Science 1 Instructor Willie McArthur emphasized the importance of training the cadets to become leaders and entrusting them to carry out tasks and missions, thus readying them for the next phase of their lives. One cadet, Odalys Perez, shared how the program has already had a profound impact on her, transforming her from a person who felt unmotivated and directionless to a confident leader with a clear sense of purpose.

The purpose of the inspections is to ensure that the units operate and maintain U.S. Navy standards, but the impact of the program on the cadets’ personal and leadership development is evident.
