United States announces team for 2024 Paralympics, with 225 members heading to Paris

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee has revealed the official 2024 U.S. Paralympic team roster for the Paris Games. The team consists of 110 men, 110 women, and five guides. This year’s Paralympic Opening Ceremony will be historic. It will be held outside a stadium for the first time, taking place along the Champs-Élysées and at the Place de la Concorde.

Competition Details

The Paris Paralympic Games will run from August 29 to September 8. The events will feature 549 medal competitions across 22 sports. Competitions will occur at famous landmarks such as the Grand Palais, Roland Garros, and the Esplanade des Invalides. The Eiffel Tower will also serve as a backdrop for blind soccer, with a specially built stadium nearby.

Star Athletes to Watch

Swimmer Jessica Long is among the standout athletes on the U.S. team. She ranks second in American history with 29 medals, including 16 golds. Long first competed in the Paralympics at the age of 12 in 2004. She will now make her sixth appearance at the Games.

Three veteran athletes—Oksana Masters, Tatyana McFadden, and Tahl Leibovitz—will compete in their seventh Paralympic Games. Masters, 35, has participated in every Summer and Winter Games since 2012. She holds the U.S. record with 14 Winter Paralympic medals. McFadden, also 35, is a 24-time World Marathon Major winner and a 20-time Paralympic medalist. She is just one medal away from tying the U.S. track and field record held by Bart Dodson. Leibovitz, a 49-year-old table tennis player, debuted at the 1996 Atlanta Games. He won singles gold that year.

Team Sports and Medal Hopes

The U.S. team aims to defend its titles in men’s wheelchair basketball and women’s sitting volleyball. Both teams have claimed gold in the last two Paralympic Games.

At the previous Paralympic Games in Tokyo, the U.S. finished with the fourth-most total medals (104) and third-most gold medals (37). China led both categories, winning 207 total medals and 96 golds for the fifth consecutive Summer Games.

The 2024 Paralympic Games promise to be a remarkable event. The U.S. team is ready to make its mark on the global stage.
