Texas Lawmakers React to Biden’s Decision to Drop Out of 2024 Presidential Bid

President Biden’s announcement to end his reelection bid for the White House has sparked widespread reactions from political figures across the country and here in North Texas. Texas lawmakers from both parties have shared their thoughts on what this historic decision means for November’s election.

NBC spoke with various Texas lawmakers to gauge their responses. Following the sudden announcement on Sunday afternoon, some Texas politicians admitted they were still adjusting to the fallout.

Social media quickly buzzed with reactions, including that of U.S. Senate candidate Colin Allred. He said, “I thank President Joe Biden for his service and willingness to put country before self.”

After Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s presidential candidate, many Texas Democrats voiced their support for Harris to win the bid, although some expressed concerns.

Democrats hope Biden’s decision will energize their base for November, while Texas Republicans criticized the development. Both of Texas’s senators weighed in on the announcement.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) posted a picture of former President Richard Nixon – who famously departed the White House – without a caption, minutes after the decision. U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) wrote, “If Dems think trading Biden for his failed border czar is going to change anything, they’re dreaming…and if President Biden is not competent to run for reelection, he should step down from the presidency.”

Several Republican state lawmakers agreed with Cornyn, believing this move set them up for success in November.

The political landscape continues to evolve following Biden’s decision, with both parties gearing up for a contentious election season.
