Protesters Rally Against SB4 at Texas’ Capitol, Sparking Concerns of Racial Profiling
Over the weekend, hundreds gathered outside the Texas Capitol to protest Governor Greg Abbott’s Operation Lonestar and Senate Bill 4 (SB4). The controversial new law grants Texas law enforcement the authority to arrest individuals suspected of crossing the border illegally. Critics argue that this could result in dangerous racial profiling of Latino Texans.
Jessie F. Fuentes from the Eagle Pass Border Coalition expressed concerns, stating, “Local authorities will now be able to stop you because of the color of your skin.” The impending implementation of SB4 on Wednesday has sparked intense discussions among immigrant families about safety and potential consequences.
As the Supreme Court deliberates on whether Texas can enforce this immigration law—a domain typically under federal jurisdiction—the community remains on edge, contemplating difficult decisions about their future in the state.
