Plano ISD Parents Voice Frustration as Bus Service Cuts Impact Over 1,000 Students
PLANO, Texas – Parents across Plano ISD are speaking out after the district confirmed significant cuts to school bus services for the 2025–2026 academic year.
The changes, first announced in May through letters to families, affect students living within two miles of their campus. Zones that previously qualified as hazardous for walking have now been reclassified as safe under state guidelines, leading to the elimination of bus routes in those areas.
According to a report from The Dallas Morning News, the cuts will impact an estimated 950 to 1,300 students. Many parents say they are now left scrambling to find safe and reliable alternatives for their children’s daily commute.
“Their transportation costs are increasing rapidly. School officials are citing labor shortages and inflation. Last year the district spent $20 million on transportation,” explained Lilly Kersh, a reporter with The Dallas Morning News.
District leaders have framed the decision as a necessary financial step, but families say the cuts pose safety concerns — especially for younger students who may now have to walk to school or cross busy roads. Some parents have taken to social media to voice frustration, sharing stories of how the changes will complicate their routines and potentially put their children at risk.
Plano ISD acknowledged the community’s concerns but emphasized that state recommendations guided the decision to reclassify certain zones as safe for walking.
As the first day of school approaches, many families continue to seek solutions. Parent groups are calling for reconsideration of the policy or additional safety measures, while others say they may need to rearrange work schedules to ensure their children get to school safely.
