North Texas Physicians Depart for Gaza Medical Mission

Two North Texas-based physicians, including Dr. Hina Cheema, a Dallas-based OBGYN, are departing DFW International Airport this weekend for an international medical mission to Gaza. Dr. Cheema, who previously visited Gaza two years ago, acknowledges that the situation has changed significantly due to ongoing intense fighting between Israel and Hamas since October. She notes that the region lacks basic medications and medical supplies, which are not being provided in sufficient quantities.

Dr. Cheema will be one of eight U.S. healthcare workers volunteering with MedGlobal, an international humanitarian organization that provides physician support. She has packed all the medical supplies she will need for the two-week mission because she expects there will be no readily available supplies in any remaining medical facility in Gaza.

The U.S. has begun delivering pallets of food aid via C-130 cargo jets into Gaza, which is enough for 38,000 meals for a population facing widespread malnutrition, particularly among children. Dr. Cheema emphasizes that every person she meets and speaks to in Gaza is trying their best to address the humanitarian crisis, despite the challenges they face.

Despite the risks and being away from her family for the next three weeks, Dr. Cheema believes her best contribution is to raise awareness about the scale of the unfolding humanitarian crisis through speaking about the medical mission
