Fort Worth Unveils New AgHub Facility to Combat Hunger and Support Local Farmers

The Tarrant Area Food Bank (TAFB) celebrates the grand opening of its innovative Sid W. Richardson Foundation Agricultural Hub (AgHub), a state-of-the-art facility designed to address food insecurity and bolster agricultural sustainability in North Texas.

On Wednesday, February 28th, Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker and other distinguished guests will gather for the ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the launch of this groundbreaking initiative. Located at 205 North Vacek Street in Fort Worth, Texas, the AgHub was built to save and redistribute fresh produce directly from farms to food banks, thereby supporting local farmers and providing nutritious meals to those in need across the region.

Following the AgHub‘s completion, TAFB began receiving donations of fresh produce from regional growers in Arizona, the Rio Grande Valley, and the Tarrant Area itself. These partnerships have been established under contracts facilitated by the AgHub, which aims to strengthen TAFB’s capacity to assist local farmers and improve access to healthy foods within their community.

Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks, recognizes the AgHub as a pioneering approach to ending hunger and addressing food security challenges while also enhancing the U.S. agriculture industry. The AgHub represents a unique collaboration among various entities, including the Texas Department of Agriculture, Tarrant County, the City of Fort Worth, and the Sid W. Richardson Foundation, whose contributions were supported by funds from the American Rescue Plan Act. Additionally, the Amon G. Carter Foundation provided substantial supplementary financing.

Over 500 TAFB local partner agencies and other food banks in the surrounding areas will benefit from the fresh produce processed at the AgHub, which will then be sorted and prepared for distribution. This endeavor ensures that residents experiencing hunger in the 13-county service area served by TAFB can enjoy more abundant supplies of fresh fruits and vegetables.

NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 remain dedicated to combating hunger in North Texas and encourage members of the press to cover the grand opening ceremony and subsequent facility tour scheduled from 8:30 am to 9:00 am on Wednesday, February 28th.
