Director Matthew Vaughn Debunks Taylor Swift’s Alleged Involvement in ‘Argylle’ Book
Matthew Vaughn, director of ‘Argylle,’ dismisses rumors linking Taylor Swift to the film’s source material.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, director Matthew Vaughn has put an end to swirling rumors and conspiracy theories connecting Taylor Swift to the creation of the ‘Argylle‘ book, the source material for the upcoming film of the same name.
Swift’s dedicated fanbase, known as Swifties, is accustomed to the singer dropping subtle hints about her projects. Many believed she was the mastermind behind the novel, especially considering Vaughn’s daughter was convinced of Swift’s involvement.
“I’m not a big internet guy, and it was actually my daughter who came up to me — this is the power of celebrity and the internet — and said, ‘You never told me Taylor wrote the book!'” Vaughn explained. “And I’m looking at her going, ‘What are you talking about? Taylor Swift wrote the book? She didn’t write the book!'”
Despite being credited as the screenwriter, questions arose about the source material, initially said to be an unreleased novel by first-time author Ellie Conway. Some inconsistencies in the spelling of the author’s name fueled speculation that it might be a pseudonym in line with the movie’s plot.
Bryce Dallas Howard, who stars in the film, plays the character Elly Conway, a spy novelist thrust into a real-life spy drama resembling her fictional stories. Swift fans drew connections, noting similarities such as Elly’s cat Alfie and Swift’s feline companion, Olivia Benson.
Vaughn, however, asserts the legitimacy of the ‘Argylle‘ book. “There is a real book … and it’s a really good book. And there is an Elly Conway who wrote the book, but it’s not Taylor Swift. I don’t want to be a part of that club where people try to jump on her bandwagon,” he emphasized.
Despite the online conspiracies, Vaughn laughs off the idea of Swift’s involvement, stating, “I did read the conspiracies, and I was like, wow, they don’t leave a stone unturned! But it’s not Taylor Swift. She definitely didn’t write the book.”
