Dallas Considers Lowering Speed Limits On City’s Deadliest Road

Dallas city leaders are taking significant steps to address the alarming number of pedestrian fatalities on Loop 12, the city’s deadliest road. After months of investigative reporting by NBC 5, the Dallas City Council is now considering lowering speed limits on sections of Loop 12 in Southern Dallas.

Analysis of crash data from the Texas Department of Transportation revealed that drivers struck and killed five pedestrians within just 11 months on a short stretch of Loop 12/Ledbetter Boulevard near Bonnie View Road. In response, State Senator Royce West, D-Dallas, called for a meeting with city officials and TxDOT to examine safety issues on Loop 12, now identified as the most dangerous roadway in Dallas.

On Wednesday, the Dallas City Council reviewed an ordinance to reduce speed limits on parts of Loop 12, including the area where multiple fatalities have occurred. However, council members postponed action until next month to allow more time to consider additional sections of the road for lower speed limits. Councilman Jaime Resendez emphasized that while reducing speed limits is part of the solution, it won’t solve the problem alone. “This is just part of the holistic approach we are taking to this problem” .

In addition to lowering speed limits, city officials, TxDOT, and the North Central Texas Council of Governments are exploring design changes to physically slow down traffic and create safer pedestrian crossings on Loop 12. The collaboration aims to address the root causes of the deadly accidents and improve safety for all road users.

The urgency of these changes became even clearer after new TxDOT data showed that a sixth pedestrian recently lost their life on the same one-mile stretch of Loop 12. As the city council refines its approach, residents hope these measures will prevent further tragedies on this perilous roadway.
