Dallas City Council Approves Plan to Bring Pro Women’s Soccer Team to Cotton Bowl

Dallas celebrates a milestone as the City Council greenlights the arrival of a new professional women’s soccer team to the iconic Cotton Bowl stadium.

In a significant move for women’s sports, the Dallas City Council unanimously endorsed a proposal to introduce a professional women’s soccer team to the historic Cotton Bowl stadium. Scheduled to kick off its inaugural season in August, the USL Super League will feature eight teams, with the Cotton Bowl serving as home turf for one of them.

Dallas has pledged financial support for the operation, with an annual subsidy of up to $296,000, sourced from the city’s convention, business, and hotel occupancy taxes. Mayor Eric Johnson hailed the decision, emphasizing its significance for both Dallas and sports enthusiasts. The move follows the recent announcement of bringing the Dallas Wings to the city’s Memorial Auditorium, further solidifying Dallas’s reputation as a premier sports destination.

Gerardo Sanches of Visit Dallas expressed enthusiasm for the city’s growing sports landscape, highlighting Dallas’s recognition as the nation’s top sports city. Monica Paul, Executive Director of the Dallas Sports Commission, emphasized the momentum behind women’s sports, citing recent successes and the city’s commitment to promoting diversity in athletics.

Jim Neil, owner of the new Dallas USL franchise, underscored the vast potential for growth in women’s soccer, noting the disparity in professional teams between genders. The USL is set to unveil the Dallas team’s name and logo during an event at Klyde Warren Park, signaling an exciting new chapter for women’s soccer in Dallas.
