Five people were hospitalized after an American Airlines flight from Miami to Raleigh-Durham hit unexpected turbulence on Sunday night. Flight 1286, an Airbus A321, landed safely at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) at approximately 10:50 p.m., an American Airlines spokesperson confirmed.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that the crew had reported possible injuries to both passengers and staff due to turbulence. Upon arrival, RDU Fire Rescue, along with rescue personnel from Wake and Durham counties, met the flight and transported five people to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
According to the airline, three flight attendants and two passengers were taken to the hospital and later released. American Airlines emphasized that the seat belt sign was activated when the turbulence occurred. At this time, the airline has not shared further details about the nature of the injuries sustained.
While incidents like this remain rare, the FAA and airlines continue to stress the importance of buckling up when seated. Flight crews also receive rigorous training to respond quickly and efficiently during turbulent conditions, prioritizing the safety and well‑being of every person on board.
American Airlines has stated that it will review the incident and cooperate with authorities if needed. The airline expressed gratitude to its staff and first responders for their quick action and professionalism in handling the situation, ensuring that all injured parties received prompt medical attention and support.
