Maxwell’s extraordinary performance included twenty-one 4s and ten 6s, making him the first Australian to score a double century in an ODI. Despite a leg sprain, Maxwell maintained the run rate by consistently hitting boundaries and sixes.
Skipper Pat Cummins played a crucial role, contributing an unbeaten 12 runs in 68 balls, ensuring that no more wickets fell to Afghanistan.
In the 47th over, Maxwell took it upon himself to finish the game, smashing consecutive huge sixes, followed by a boundary, and another six. These breathtaking strokes secured Australia’s victory and marked Maxwell’s double century.
Naveen-ul-Haq, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Rashid Khan claimed two wickets each for Afghanistan. Glenn Maxwell was rightfully named the ‘Player of the Match.’
Australia’s victory elevated them to third place in the standings with 12 points and a Net Run-Rate of (+)0.398, behind India and South Africa. In contrast, Afghanistan slipped to the sixth position with 8 points and a NRR of (-)0.338.
Ibrahim Zadran was the standout performer for Afghanistan, becoming the first Afghan batter to score a World Cup century, finishing unbeaten on 129 runs off 143 balls.
Despite initial setbacks in the tournament, Australia made a remarkable comeback after their losses to India and South Africa in the opening two ICC World Cup 2023 matches.
