TSA Urges Travelers to Get Real ID Before May 7 Deadline
DALLAS – Travelers could soon face issues at TSA checkpoints as the deadline for Real ID compliance approaches. Starting May 7, 2025, an enhanced form of identification will be required at airports across the U.S.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reports that about 20% of Americans still don’t have a Real ID. If your driver’s license was issued in 2016 or later, you may already be compliant. Look for a small star in the upper right corner of your ID to confirm.
If your license is not Real ID compliant, you’ll need an alternative form of identification, such as a passport, to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities and military bases. This change does not affect international travel but is meant to enhance security and streamline TSA checkpoints.
Texas residents who still need a Real ID should schedule a DMV appointment immediately. TSA spokesperson Patricia Mancha warned, “Don’t wait until May 5 to get your Real ID if you have a flight on May 7.” Delays could make last-minute appointments impossible.
TSA is also testing digital ID scanners in 15 states, allowing travelers to upload their license to a digital wallet. However, Texas is not currently participating in this program.
To avoid last-minute issues, check your ID today and plan accordingly to stay compliant with TSA’s new requirements.
