Devara Part 1 Movie Review
Star Cast: NTR Jr., Janhvi Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Shruti Marathe, Prakash Raj, Shrikant
Director: Koratala Siva
Review Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐(4/5)
Script Analysis
Koratala Siva’s Devara Part 1 unfolds with intense, larger-than-life action and drama, presenting a classic good-versus-evil showdown among the fishing communities of four adjoining villages. Jr NTR’s character, Devara, leads his people with unquestioned authority, but when he discovers that their activities inadvertently support criminal elements, he shifts gears to halt the nefarious operations. This sets him on a collision course with Bhaira, played by Saif Ali Khan, whose ruthless attempts to dominate and deceive drive the narrative forward.
The film’s structure follows a dual timeline where Devara’s past as a heroic leader segues into his son Vara’s tale. Despite his father’s valor, Vara’s character (also played by Jr NTR) is quite the opposite, employing cunning rather than courage in his pursuit of power. A web of deceit, betrayal, and vengeance builds as Vara allies with Bhaira, unaware of the darker consequences. Prakash Raj’s character, Singappa, narrates this generational saga, setting the stage for Devara Part 2, where the mystery behind Devara’s fate will finally be revealed.
However, while the script delivers on action and suspense, the female characters are largely sidelined. Devara’s mother (Zarina Wahab) and other women are given minimal roles, while Janhvi Kapoor’s character, Thangam, barely has screen time. For a film of such scale, the script could benefit from a more balanced focus, allowing its supporting characters to leave a stronger impact.
Star Performance
Jr NTR is the undeniable heart of Devara Part 1, captivating audiences with his high-energy dual roles. Known widely after RRR, Jr NTR brings both gravitas and charisma to the screen, especially as Devara, whose noble intensity leaves a lasting impression. Though the dual role doesn’t feature direct interactions between the characters, Jr NTR’s distinct portrayals of father and son enhance the film’s emotional depth.
Saif Ali Khan, with years of experience in villainous roles, excels once again, blending ruthless villainy with quiet menace. His portrayal of Bhaira draws from past roles like Omkara but with a uniquely rustic edge. Prakash Raj as Singappa and Shrikant as Rayappa offer notable performances that complement the leads, while Zarina Wahab adds emotional gravitas as Devara’s resilient mother.
Direction and Music
Koratala Siva’s direction amplifies the scale and intensity of Devara Part 1, capturing the grandeur of the narrative through sweeping cinematography by R. Rathnavelu and precise cuts by editor A. Sreekar Prasad. Sabu Cyril’s production design paints a vivid backdrop that immerses viewers in the fishing village and its struggles.
While the background score by Anirudh Ravichander pulses with energy, adding to the epic tone, the songs fall short of memorable, with lyrics that don’t quite enhance the film’s impact. Despite this, Siva’s direction shines through as he balances storytelling with mainstream masala action.
The Last Word
Devara Part 1 is an action-packed spectacle that delivers thrills and drama in classic masala style. With Jr NTR’s powerful dual-role performance, Saif Ali Khan’s sinister presence, and Koratala Siva’s grand vision, the film is sure to please fans of intense action dramas. Although it leaves some characters underdeveloped, Devara Part 1 sets up an enticing premise for its sequel. An entertaining rollercoaster ride, it’s long but never feels like it.
Verdict: A must-watch for fans of action-packed masala films, led by an electric Jr NTR and a thrilling story that leaves you wanting more!
