Keller ISD to Introduce ‘Alternative School Meals’ for Students with Over $25 in Lunch Debt

Starting October 21, Keller Independent School District (ISD) will introduce a new meal policy where students whose lunch debt exceeds $25 will receive an “alternative school meal” until the balance is resolved. This change aims to address mounting lunch debts, which totaled $66,000 last year, leaving the district to cover the shortfall.

The policy has generated controversy, with concerns that offering alternative meals could stigmatize students. However, the district hopes the new regulation will encourage timely payments and reduce the financial strain caused by unpaid lunch balances.

Efforts to Address Debt:
The district will focus on multiple communication channels, such as emails, newsletters, and updates on the school website, to inform parents of negative balances and encourage payments. Families are also urged to apply for free or reduced lunch programs if needed.

In response, community members have launched an online fundraiser, which has already raised over $5,000 to help pay off student lunch debts.

Keller ISD remains committed to ensuring no student goes without food, but hopes this new policy will help manage costs while encouraging responsibility.
