Padma Shri for Kiran Nadar: 40 years, and counting

Discover the remarkable journey of Kiran Nadar, Padma Shri awardee, and Chairperson of Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA).

Kiran Nadar, Chairperson of the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) in New Delhi, has been honored with the Padma Shri this year for her significant contributions to the art world over the past four decades. Her journey began in the 1980s when the art market in India was still nascent, with limited avenues for education and appreciation of art. Despite the absence of auction houses and a relatively small art community, Nadar began collecting art, gradually cultivating her passion.

In 1999, Nadar started collecting art more seriously, eventually leading to the inception of KNMA around 2003-2004. Initially housed in Noida, the museum expanded to Saket within a year. With a focus on modern and contemporary art, KNMA has grown to become one of India’s largest private museums, boasting a diverse collection that includes antiquities, miniature paintings, works from South Asia, and renowned European artists.

The museum’s collection has now reached close to 14,000 works, including significant pieces like Amrita Sher-Gil’s ‘The Story Teller.’ Nadar also expresses her admiration for Raja Ravi Varma’s work. Despite initial challenges in garnering public interest, KNMA has successfully engaged with audiences through educational programs for all ages. Nadar believes that receiving the Padma Shri will further enhance the museum’s visibility and attract more visitors curious to explore its rich collection and understand why the prestigious award has been conferred.

Nadar’s journey exemplifies her dedication to art and her vision of creating a cultural hub that fosters appreciation and understanding of diverse artistic expressions. Through KNMA, she continues to champion the importance of art in enriching lives and communities, leaving an indelible mark on India’s cultural landscape.
