On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the successful test launch of a new Zircon hypersonic cruise missile and called it a “big event” for the country.
Russian General Staff chief Valery Gerasimov spoke to the President via a video call and mentioned that the successful launch took place Tuesday from the Admiral Groshkov frigate located in the White Sea, north of Russia.
The missile hit a target in the Barents Sea without any flaws, he added.
Putin turned a year older and was celebrating his 68th birthday on Wednesday and said, “Equipping our armed forces — the army and the navy — with the latest, truly unparalleled weapon systems will certainly ensure the defense capability of our country in the long term.”
Last year, Putin stated that the Zircon would fly at nine times the sound speed and have a range of 1,000 kilometers (620 miles).
