Monday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern delayed New Zealand's national elections
by four weeks as the country battles with a new coronavirus outbreak in the
largest city of NZ, Auckland.
election was due for Sept. 19 but now will be held on Oct. 17. According to New
Zealand law, Ardern could delay the election for up to about two months.
have been requests from the Opposition parties for delay after a virus outbreak
in Auckland last week which resulted in a two-week lockdown and impacted election
officials, it is reported that the virus was reintroduced to New Zealand from
abroad but no one has been able to come up with the likely source of the virus.
The outbreak in Auckland has grown to 49 infections, and authorities believe
that these cases are all connected, hoping that the virus will not spread
beyond the cluster.
