Legendary Kathak Dancer, Pandit Birju Maharaj Dies At 83

Kathak legend Pandit Birju Maharaj passed away at his home in Delhi late Sunday after experiencing a cardiovascular failure. He was 83.

A beneficiary of the nation's second-most substantial nonmilitary personnel grant, Padma Vibhushan, was affectionately called Pandit-Ji or Maharaj-Ji by his pupils and armies of devotees and was one of India's most popular artists.

As indicated by reports, Birju Maharaj played with his grandsons late on Sunday night when his wellbeing disintegrated, and he became oblivious. He was taken to the medical clinic, where he was proclaimed dead.

"He was with us when this occurred. He had his supper, and we played 'antakshari' because he adored old music. He sat down... furthermore, out of nowhere, his breathing became lopsided. We think it was heart failure as he was likewise a heart patient.

"This occurred somewhere in the range of 12.15, and 12.30 am. It is more likely than not been one moment or thereabouts. We raced to the emergency clinic; however, sadly, we could not save him. Before arriving at the clinic, He passed on," Birju Maharaj's granddaughter Ragini, a Kathak artist herself, was cited as saying by news organization PTI.

"Two of his followers and his two granddaughters, my more youthful sister Yasyashashwini and me, were with him when this occurred. He was snickering and grinning in his last minutes," she said.
