Koozhangal, a Tamil film, knocked out Sardar Udham and Sherni to become India's official Oscar entry. SardarUdham, starring Vicky Kaushal and directed by Shoojit Sircar, has been eliminated from contention to be India's official entry to the Academy Awards. The official selection is the Tamil film Koozhangal. Following the announcement, jury members explain why one of the most popular films, Sardar Udham, was not chosen.

The panel member Indraadip Dasgupta reasoned that the film "portrays our animosity for the British." Dasgupta noted that while he liked the film's production quality and photography, "SardarUdham is a long book that focuses on the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy. It's a sincere attempt to make a picture about an unsung hero of India's independence movement."

Dasgupta went on to say, "However, in the process, it reaffirms our hatred toward the British. It is unjust to cling on to hatred in this age of globalization."

"Many have admired Sardar Udham for its cinematic qualities, including camera work, editing, sound design, and depiction of the period," noted another jury member Sumit Basu, citing the film's length as the issue. I believed the film's length was a problem."

"It has a delayed climax," Basu remarked. It takes a long time for a viewer to feel the agony of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre martyrs."

Sardar Udham is a film about a rebel named Sardar Udham Singh, who is best known for assassinating Michael O'Dwyer to revenge the Jallianwala Bagh atrocity.
