A woman who used a Taser to rob a 71-year-old has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.
She attacked the victim in November 2019 in a busy parking lot in Burleson. The victim was coming out of her car when she was attacked by Nakayla Wright to rob her purse.
Tarrant County DA Lori Varnell said, "I think that is a just sentence. I think it shows that if you target the elderly in Tarrant County, you’re not going to be looking at probation."
It was the morning before Thanksgiving on Nov. 27, 2019, in a Burleson strip mall parking lot in front of a Ross.
The victim had just reached and came out of her car to open the gate for her 5-year-old granddaughter. It was then Varnell was attacked by Wright and another woman and Wright tased her in the back.
Varnell said, "I couldn’t even think of a more careless or reckless thing to do with someone’s life than send electricity teeming through their body."
The victim screamed and fell to the ground. The woman robbed her purse and drove in a white SUV.
Varnell reported that proof of Wright shopping in a Tarrant County store using Varnell’s stolen credit card helped officers track down suspects.
