Dallas library could erase your book fines in October
The Dallas Public Library is launching an amnesty program in October, giving library customers a chance to have their outstanding fines forgiven. While late fees were eliminated in 2019, charges for lost or damaged books remain, causing some users to abandon their library cards.
According to a city memo, 16% of Dallas library users stopped utilizing their cards due to these fees. To encourage patrons to return, the library has introduced “The Big Read Down.”
Throughout October, library cardholders can earn fine forgiveness through reading and participation. For every 15 minutes of reading, $1 will be deducted from fees. Attending a library program will count for $20 in credits.
Additionally, cardholders can donate their reading minutes to help others erase their fees, further fostering a sense of community and access for all. This initiative aims to welcome back library users and promote literacy across the city.
