Coppell ISD school board votes to close Pinkerton Elementary School
In a decision prompted by budget constraints, the Coppell Independent School District (Coppell ISD) has voted to permanently close Pinkerton Elementary School. Despite vocal opposition from parents, the school board moved forward with the closure during a meeting held on Monday night.
Throughout September, Coppell ISD held workshops and town halls to discuss options in addressing the district’s declining enrollment and budget deficit. Ultimately, board members agreed that the closure was necessary and could not be delayed another year. By shutting down Pinkerton Elementary, the district is expected to save $2.1 million.
While the decision has sparked disappointment among many in the community, board members emphasized that no teachers or staff members will lose their jobs as a result of the closure.
The dual language immersion program will remain unchanged for now, though board officials noted it will be revisited later. However, the district’s baccalaureate program will be consolidated as part of the changes.
This situation mirrors the challenges faced by other North Texas school districts, which have also had to make tough choices due to declining enrollment and financial strain.
Parents will receive more details in the coming weeks regarding the impact on students and any changes to the programs that remain in place.
